Stability and Stabilization of Second-order Systems

A. J. PRITCHARD

Lecturer in Applied Mathematics, School of Engineering Science, University of Warwick Coventry CV4 7AL

A new method of constructing Liapunov functions is applied to systems described by non-linear, second-order, ordinary differential equations. General results are presented for which such systems are asymptotically stable and some consideration is given to the construction of feedback control loops which guarantee the controlled system is asymptotically stable. The general theory is applied to some simple systems and the results compared with known results.
