Oscillatory Viscous Flows. Review and Extension

N. RILEY

School of Mathematics and Physics, University of East Anglia Norwich, England

The flow induced by a body oscillating in an unbounded viscous fluid which is otherwise at rest is discussed. Using the technique of matched asymptotic expansion a logical and self-consistent theory is developed. The extensive literature which exists on this topic is evaluated within the framework of the theory presented here.
