In Marshall & Mitchell (1973) a finite element was introduced which matches Dirichlet boundary data exactly and was compared with the standard bilinear finite element which matches such data at only a finite number of points on the boundary. Our purpose here is to compare these same two elements with respect to the energy norm and the process of minimizing the energy functional.
